Mae Kha Canal

Mae Kha Canal (or Khlong Mae Kha) is a redeveloped canal district with paved walkways on both sides and a photogenic yellow pedestrian bridge. Hot and deserted in the middle of the day it cools down and comes alive after 5:30pm

The canals (khlongs) were never major thoroughfares like those that flourished in Bangkok in the 20th century, so Mae Kha is a canal more typical of Chiang Mai in that it runs past the backs of the houses which all face streets on either side. Of course, now that the old canal is cleaned up and and attracting visitors, there is the opportunity for local residents to open a pop-up shop at the back of their house!

The canal has lost a step in glamor and hype since it first openned in late 2020, but is still a pleasant place to take a stroll, and the thinner crowds are an improvement!
