Chiang Khong

Chiang Khong is a sleepy town on the banks of the Mekong river in Chiang Rai province. For visitors to Thailand, the most salient fact about Chiang Khong is that it serves as the point of departure for boat companies cruising to Luang Prabang in Laos.

View of Mekong River at Chiang Khong

If you intend cruising down the Mekong River, you will need to spend the night before departure staying in Chiang Khong. There are various bus and taxi services that will get you there from Chiang Mai to CHiang Khong, or from Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong.

Another way to catch your boat on time is to book a multi-day tour with us and we will drop you off at your hotel in Chiang Khong at tour completion. Our Chiang Khong Connect itinerary is built exactly with this in mind, but we are happy to customize other Chiang Rai itineraries to lead into your river cruise.

There are many guest houses and small hotels in Chiang Khong, mostly lining the Mekong river with the Laos town of Huaixai visible on the opposite bank.
