Chiang Khong is a sleepy town on the banks of the Mekong river in Chiang Rai province. For visitors to Thailand, the most salient fact about Chiang Khong is that it serves as the point of departure for boat companies cruising to Luang Prabang in Laos.
If you intend cruising down the Mekong River, you will need to spend the night before departure staying in Chiang Khong. There are various bus and taxi services that will get you there from Chiang Mai to CHiang Khong, or from Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong.
