The Monk’s Trail starts from the foothils to the west of Chiang Mai University and ascends to Wat Pha Lat. It is possible to also continue all the way up to Doi Suthep Temple, but that is a much longer and steeper section of the trail.

For moderately fit hikers, you should allow around 45 minutes from the trail head up to Wat Pha Lat, and around 30 minutes for the return journey.
We recommend for you safety you don’t walk alone, and ideally with one of out guides. For larger private tour groups (4 or more people) our tours include both a guide and a driver, so this opens up the possibility of hiking one-way.
Long skirts or trousers are required at the temples. Shoulders must also be covered.
If you want to go all the way up to Doi Sutep Temple you will need to plan the whole day around this hike. We need to assess your fitness level (or range of fitness for a group) and assign you a specialist hiking guide.
